Agentic Marketing

Marketing run by AI agents that decide and carry out actions end to end (who to message, what to offer, when) and then measure the result, rather than drafting copy for a person to send.

Definition

Agentic marketing is the use of AI agents that autonomously decide and execute marketing actions end to end: choosing what to do, doing it with tools in a real channel, and measuring the result. It differs from marketing automation, where a person writes the rules in advance and the system follows them, and from an AI copilot, which drafts a message or a plan but does not act. The useful test for any product sold as agentic is to ask what the agent does that no person approved beforehand. The loop is decide, act, close and measure; the close, where the customer actually buys, is the step most products skip, and without it the agent cannot learn what worked.

How it applies in India

India has a short loop for agentic marketing because WhatsApp is the default consumer channel and UPI is the payment rail, both inside the conversation: an agent can find intent, answer from the catalogue, take the order, collect payment and raise a GST invoice without the customer leaving the chat. The limits are the DPDP Act’s consent rules and Meta’s opt-in and quality rules, which need enforcing at send time. WatEase ships commerce agents today; its marketing decision layer is in early access.

Frequently asked questions

Is agentic marketing the same as marketing automation?

No. Marketing automation runs rules a person wrote in advance, such as sending a reminder two hours after a cart is abandoned. An agent reasons about the case in front of it: if the customer replies asking for another colour, it checks stock, rebuilds the cart and sends a payment link. Most teams use both: rules where behaviour must be guaranteed, agents where the conversation is open-ended.

Does agentic marketing need consent?

Yes. An agent that sends marketing messages is bound by the same rules as a person: recorded opt-in under the DPDP Act and Meta’s policies, approved templates outside the 24-hour service window, and opt-outs honoured on every send.
