Definition

WhatsApp Pay is WhatsApp's native payments capability in India, built on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) under NPCI's multi-bank model. For person-to-person use it works like any UPI app: link a bank account, send and receive money inside a chat. For commerce, WhatsApp supports payments in chat for businesses on the WhatsApp Business API in India — a customer receives an order-details message and pays via UPI (or cards through supported payment-gateway partners such as Razorpay or PayU) without leaving WhatsApp, collapsing the browse-order-pay journey into a single thread. NPCI initially capped WhatsApp Pay's UPI user rollout, then lifted the cap in late 2024, clearing it for WhatsApp's full Indian user base.

How it applies in India

India is WhatsApp Pay's flagship market — it exists because of UPI. For merchants, in-chat UPI collection removes the highest-friction step in WhatsApp commerce: instead of pasting a payment link that opens a browser, the customer approves a UPI request in the same chat. Settlement, refunds, and reconciliation run through the integrated gateway, and GST invoicing still happens on the merchant side. WatEase generates order-details messages with UPI checkout and links Razorpay/PhonePe/Paytm payments to the originating chat for reconciliation.

Frequently asked questions

Is WhatsApp Pay available to all users in India?

Yes. NPCI removed the phased user-cap on WhatsApp Pay's UPI rollout in late 2024, allowing WhatsApp to offer UPI payments to its entire Indian user base. Business payments in chat additionally require the merchant to be on the WhatsApp Business API with a supported payment configuration.

Does WhatsApp charge a fee on payments?

WhatsApp does not levy its own consumer fee on UPI person-to-person payments. For business payments, normal payment-gateway charges apply through the integrated gateway; UPI person-to-merchant transactions in India currently carry zero MDR for most categories under government policy.

How is WhatsApp Pay different from sending a Razorpay payment link in chat?

A payment link bounces the customer to a browser checkout; payments in chat keep the entire flow — order summary, payment method, UPI approval, confirmation — inside the WhatsApp thread, which converts better on mobile. Behind the scenes a gateway still processes the transaction.
